1) Why I chose this book : What with many of my family members headed to New Zealand this fall thought I'd read up on it to see what I was missing2) Type of book : Short historical reference book3) Formatting/Editing : Well written4) Best/Worst aspect of book : Relatively packed with info including mentions of early expeditions by Dutchman Abel Tasman and his encounter of a flotilla of MÄori war canoes along with Captain James Cook. Come to realize Moana of Disney fame was probably names after the Moa (a giant flightless bird) that was sadly hunted to extinction and that whilefood and flax were at one time hot exports a secondary trade in smoked heads was at one time raking it in (gross!) and what of the Boyd Massacre which resulted in the entire crew ending up in the cooking pots of the locals circa 1809 (sounds like a story in itself). Plenty more to learn of Chief HÅne Heke, John Busby (whom founded the New Zealand wine industry) the early missionaries and more.5) Favorite passage: "Anyone attempting to conquer and settle this land would certainly need to be prepared to fight for it."6) Bottom Line: Very informative book I would recommend and I want to go!
I recommend that after one reads The MÄori: The History and Legacy of New Zealand’s Indigenous People before reading this e-book to enhance your understanding of the Maori culture. The e-book starts out by describing the Dutchman Abel Tasman experience with the first contact with the Maori. After that, the e-book describes two different theories related to the Polynesians migration to New Zealand. This e-book also describes the Maori culture of war and the Musket Wars. The e-book describes the effects of missionaries and whalers on the Maori. The e-book describes James Busby and his influence on the constitutional development of New Zealand. Followed by a description of how the British swindled or used treaties to steal Maori lands which caused the New Zealand wars. It is interesting to note that in the appendix the treaty of Waitangi is provided in full.
Like many of these Charles River Editor books, they have an interesting title, look good but deliver very little. I've learned now to look for this publisher and to avoid anything they offer
It provided a comprehensive coverage of the history and development of the nation of New Zealand.
Smaller than I though it would be. Not hardcover. Only black and white
I read this before traveling to New Zealand and it was a helpful layer of history and a lens to focus on the cultural diversity.
We all love to read history and I love it even more now that I am older. Being able to get a quick fix in about an hour is so wonderful. My thanks to Charles River Editors in coming up with all of these books. I can read and refresh my memory in just a little bit. I love these books! History at it's finest, in a flash!
